NITRO presentation in Health IT conference 2025

December 17, 2025

A new liaison between the NITRO project and the National Cyber Security Agency of Greece (the Greek CERT/CSIRT) was established following the participation of Prof. Christos Xenakis (University of Piraeus) at the Health IT Conference 2025, held on 30–31 October 2025. During his presentation at the panel entitled “Cybersecurity in Healthcare,” Prof. Xenakis discussed the advantages of artificial intelligence in the healthcare sector. He highlighted that AI can enable faster and more accurate clinical decision-making and diagnoses, provide reliable prognoses, reduce operational costs, and support personalized treatments and therapies.

At the same time, he emphasized that the adoption of AI introduces significant cybersecurity challenges, including concerns related to system transparency, accountability, and the availability of documentation explaining algorithmic decision-making. Importantly, Prof. Xenakis stressed that technological safeguards alone are insufficient without strong user awareness. He underlined the critical role of informed and trained users—such as healthcare professionals and system administrators—in mitigating cyber risks, ensuring the secure and ethical use of AI systems, recognizing potential threats, and responding effectively to security incidents. In this context, enhancing user awareness and education—key outcomes of the NITRO project—was presented as a fundamental pillar for strengthening both cybersecurity and AI-enabled cybersecurity in the healthcare sector.

The NITRO project was represented by Prof. Christos Xenakis (University of Piraeus) and Ms. Stella Tsitsoula (HCSI), who engaged in fruitful discussions with representatives from the National Cyber Security Agency of Greece, the e-Government Center for Social Security of Greece, the Greek Ministry of Health, and Guardbyte.
